John Smyth’s death in 2018 meant an "appalling abuser" associated with the Church of England escaped justice for crimes stretching back decades. Smyth used his role in a Christian charity to assault over 100 children and young men - and the Archbishop of Canterbury resigned after being criticised in a scathing report earlier this month.

The only Church of England bishop to publicly demand the resignation of former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said Wednesday that his departure wasn't enough to solve the church’s “profound failure” in safeguarding vulnerable people or ease the trauma suffered by victims of abuse.

It is very clear that I must take personal and institutional responsibility for the long and re-traumatizing period between 2013 and 2024,” said Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
