What does it take to bring a massive tree to Pioneer Courthouse Square to celebrate the holidays? Two flatbed tractor-trailer rigs and about 41 Douglas firs. For the past 23 years, Stimson Lumber Company has donated a massive Douglas fir to be the centerpiece of celebrations at “Portland’s living room” throughout December.

More than 10,000 people gathered when the square opened on April 6, 1984. Lindberg considers it one of the city’s most striking success stories. “It is a place of protest and celebration,” Lindberg says, citing visits by presidential candidates, war protests, and major festivals.
